Chancellor of the institution, Arch. Bishop Sam Amaga, disclosed this at a press briefing to announce preparations for its take-off. According to Amaga, the university is being established to realise global standard and compete favourably with universities in Europe.
He said apart from job creation in modern technology, the university had been designed to put a stop to the drift abroad by Nigerians in search of ICT technology. Bishop Amaga lamented that the country’s higher institutions had suffered great infrastructural neglect because of poor funding by government. To avoid this, he said over 70 percent of the cost of infrastructure at the university would be sourced through partnership arrangements that have been put in place to make it the best in the country. Salem University, according to Amaga which will take off with a student population of 360 has 29 approved programmes by National University Commission.
“The tuition fee per semester in the school is N175. 000”, Amaga said, describing the venture as a form of social responsibility to the society. Disclosing that there would be scholarship awards to indigent students and those who distinguish themselves, Amaga noted the arrangement would spur poor students who are brilliant to attain greater heights

University Address
KM 16, Lojoka-Ajaokuta Road. No steel had been produced,” he alleged. This practice, the committee noted, had been going since the company was conceded to GNIL three years ago.At National Iron Ore, massive cannibalization of government properties and equipment were noticed, with breakdown of plants and machines due to lack of spare parts.“Cannibalization of new equipment in the units still in the hands of major contractors to replace broken down equipments including over 2km of conveyor belts. When quantified, this runs into millions of naira.“While records show that the company had a stock pile of over 400,000 tons of refined iron ore concentrate, Messrs GNIL claimed to have met only about180,000 tons.“This has been evacuated and apparently exported without payment to the Federal Government. We also noted that though the company is still in production, where its products are taken to, at what cost, etc, is not clearly defined.”
What is certain is that no liquid steel is being produced out of the concentrate here in Nigeria. Again, staff are not paid as at when due,” the committee observed. The committee described the situation at Ajaokuta as a disaster. It was noted that the complex was deserted, vandalized and over grown with weeds.“We saw absolutely no evidence of investment except in selected finished units of the complex. There was no evidence of any attempt to complete the remaining two percent of the life-wire of the complex- the Blast Furnace,” the committee lamented. The committee recommended that the Ajaokuta Steel company be returned to the Russians and Ukrainians to manage, while the major contractors handling the Iron Ore company at Itakpe be made to complete the repairs and complete all the units.

WRIGHT ABDUL (The Personality of The Month)

I spit rhymes that make u high,my music is a message to the world it always teaching the ghetto how to make use of themselves, message to the traditional rulers let them hear what I have to say cause they are not helping the society, talking about love its all about the message, my name is abdulrazaq okehi but my fans do call me wright abdul,I hail 4rom ihima in okehi local government but grew up in lagos but don’t be surprised that I woke up on may 29 2007 and found my self in Cardiff city in London.

I do hip hop and ragga but describes as Ebira pidgin mixed with English,Ebira ragga on a ragga beat,am a writer and i do a funny rap that will make yu laugh out ur stress.

My music is unprecedented, real, comical and a good message to the adult, traditional rulers, youths and kids,I have spoken a things that no rapper/singer has spoken about in a single album, yea my inspiration comes from what I see and hear about and my kind of music is new from what Ebira people have heard so far and the message is deep and relatively explicit,It is a self titled album of 12 tracks.

It is one of the most original hip-hop albums with a very down-2-earth concept and content according to the comment received from the stakeholders till date.wright abdul is set 2 surprised many with his bundle of talents as a song writer and producer.

He will be working with some good artist like kabiru adam a.k.a King B(okene),reality boi and da Quest.

Presently iam working on my solo album titled OHINOYI.
111..Intro
2..My town
3..iréku
4..Who yu besef
5..Ohigi osiya
6..Shoe get size
7..Shokoto don tear
8..Pàràhu pooro
9..Méyi rusu
10..Iréyi négu
11..Ohinoyi
12..Outro

My final note is dedicated 2 junk emceeeeee!!!!!!!!! He died around Osara road on his return from Abuja this afternoon. Two other people; the driver and a colleague reportedly died with him in the ghastly motor crash.

After several months of contest between the late Keita and his co-candidate, Ozi Okasime, Keita finally got his ticket yesterday the 8th of December 2007 in Abuja to run for Okene Local Government chairmanship election on the platform of Action Congres (AC). Unfortunately, the ticket and the candidate could not arrive okene alive.

His body is on the way to Okene public cemetry (Oganya) for burial as we prepare this report. This is not the first time such unfortunate end will meet an Ebira politician. It could be recalled that between the hours of 7 and 8pm on friday the 20th of October 2006, just immediately after taking his iftar (termination of fasting), Engr. Ahmed Onogoh breathed his last in his Kaduna home. Meanwhile he received his senatorial candidacy ticket on the platform of People's Democratic Party (PDP) some hours before his sudden death.

It was indeed another tragedy for the Ebiras as his death marked the third of similar tragedies within a short space of 5 months. The tragedies include the death of Late Senator A T Ahmed, Ebira gubernatorial candidate at the time and Hon. Muhammed Onusagba of Kogi state house assembly. They both died in ghastly motor accidents just like Isa keita, all on the same road.

It is important to bring to your notice that as the Local Government election approches, there is tension in Ebira land. Two people died few days ago during the clash between AC and PDP in Ogaminana, Adavi Local Govt. According to our correspondent, Ismail Amin who reported from Lokoja, the clash begun when the AC supporters who were returning from a rally held at the Local Government primary school Oziokutu began hauling stones at PDP members holding a ward meeting.

Trouble started when PDP members retaliated. There were gunshots and a guy named Mall Hamza was shot dead. Another man reportedly lost his life in the hands of his men when a bullet mistakenly hit him as a member 'tested' his rifle. So far, two lives were lost but the fight has been resolved.

As the year ends, Ebiras are travelling home for the season's celebration. While troubles loom, it is our hope that the festivals will be peacefully celebrated, at least before the voting starts.

See more reports in next week edition of EbiraView weekly. She had the benefit of being raised in a successful family environment unlike the hardship that many in her county of a150 million people experience. With her mother being an administrative officer in Nigeria’s national broadcast television station and her father being one of Nigeria’s most successful TV personalities and later head of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Oyiza’s chosen career path came as no surprise.

‘I was born to be in media’, says Oyiza, who at an early age became fascinated with seeing her father anchoring the 7 o’clock news on Nigeria’s most popular television station. She recalls her father’s daily trips to the television station, and her anxious desire to accompany him. That desire was finally satisfied when she began accompanying her father to the studio on a regular basis. The desire became a passion when she was selected to along with her brother, to appear on a children’s television program - Children’s Time. Her first on-camera appearance was so impressive that she soon became a regular on the show.

Her next significant television experience came when she appeared alongside the late well-known Nigerian actor/producer Matt Dadzie as the character ‘Hadiza’ in the television drama Moment of Truth.

Throughout her early school years, she appeared on stage in several plays and productions. The highlight of her early performances came when she was chosen to play the lead role in a special presentation for the president of Nigeria - who at that time was Shehu Shagari. By this time Oyiza was certain of a future in the media/arts. She pursued that destiny by enrolling in the Theatre Arts & Media Studies at the University of Jos. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

She moved from Jos to Lagos and joined the cable/satellite television network MultiChoice Nigeria in marketing and public relations. She held the position as DSTV Sales Coordinator helping to pioneer a new wave of Satellite TV in Nigeria. She later transferred to Johannesburg South Africa to work for the parent company MutliChoice Africa supervising key subscription accounts across Sub-Sahara Africa. While in Johannesburg, Oyiza left MultiChoice Africa to do contact work for CNN through their Africa advertising representative. Her personality and determination led to more contracts with TV Africa. Shortly after, she was deployed back to Lagos Nigeria to head their West African regional office.

In 2000, she left TV Africa to work as a consultant for Africa Independent Television (AIT) – an established TV network that was planning a major thrust into the international television market. With a strong will and a quest for fulfillment, Oyiza’s journalism career really kicked off when AIT launched in the U.S market in 2002. This led to Oyiza’s well-planned entrance onto the international media scene, and a world where few African women have been before and sustained.

The professionalism reflected in both her on-and-off camera works have led to ground-breaking interviews with notables such as the late Nigerian first Lady Stella Obasanjo, Nobel Peace Price winner Wangari Matai, Ambassador Andrew Young and many more.

She currently produces Sana’a - a 30-minute human-interest program for AIT, and also writes and contributes to various online magazines on Africa-related issues. Oyiza lives & works in New York City and is a member of the United Nations Press, U.S Foreign Press Center and the NY City Press.

She thinks of herself as a combination of the simplicity of her mother Tessy and the strive for excellence of dad Tom. Her drive song is Bon Jovi’s ‘It’s my Life’.

www.oyiza.com

1. A.K. Salihu and Hon. Suleiman Abdul Kokori, both members of the Action Congress (AC) representing Okene/Ogori-Magogo Federal Constitutency were last Friday arrested by the police.
The Federal legislators and three others were arrested in connection with the violent crisis which engulfed Kogi Central Senatorial district shortly after the last April general elections.
Others arrested alongside the legislators are a former Senator and AC gubernatorial candidate in the last election, Mohammed Ohiare and a traditional ruler, Chief Ohimonozi of Kuroko
Though details of their arrest are still very sketchy as at the time of filling this report, THISDAY learnt in Lokoja that the AC chieftains were being detained at the Force Headquar-ters in Abuja to explain their roles in the violent clashes that erupted in the area. The post-election violence in Kogi Central district had led to loss of lives and destruction of properties worth billions of naira.
Ohiare and Ohize, who were the leaders of AC in Kogi Central were alleged to have sponsored the violent clashes in the area.
Both men have persistently denied the allegation and described it as blackmail by their political rivals.
Confirming the arrest to THISDAY in a telephone interview yesterday, Kogi State AC Chairman, Chief Mike Adeleye said the arrest and detention of the AC leaders is part of the strategies of the PDP chapter in the state to weaken the support base of the party and assassinate the character of it’s leaders. “We are not surprised by the development.
PDP has been doing everything to frustrate the party in the State including the on-going petition at the Tribunal where AC Counsel and witnesses’ lives were being threatened.
But we will remain undaunted and focused in the face of any persecution”, said Adeleye. However, in a telephone interview with THISDAY, Chief Press Secretary to Kogi State Deputy Governor, Mr. T.Y. Itopa said the arrest and detention of the AC chieftains are justified.
“They should be made to account for the wanton destruction of lives and properties that trailed the gubernatorial election in Ebira land. Besides those that were killed, others were maimed and rendered homeless while not a few people are still living in exile in Lokoja till date” he said.
Among those whose property were destroyed in the crises that engulfed the area in the wake of the election are the Dr. Farouk Abdulazeez, Deda Atta (a gubernatorial aspirant of AC who decamped to PDP few weeks to the election) and Alhaji Abdulrahman Badamasuiy.

Dangote and Nigeria

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_E2sgy5vNpEw/RqNcfDxRl-I/AAAAAAAAACg/Ec6Sm8yHf3w/s400/Dangote.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090013692516472802" />

Me, Obasanjo and Nigeria
By MIKE AWOYINFA and DIMGBA IGWE
Saturday, July 07, 2007

•Alhaji Aliko Dangote
More Stories on This Section

PROLOGUE: AMERICANS talk and proudly celebrate an ideal called the American dream. But this is a Nigerian success story come true—the Nigerian dream. The dream of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the entrepreneur par excellence, the trader turned manufacturer, probably Africa’s richest man with billions of dollars in his kitty and with mega businesses: cement manufacturing, sugar refining, flour, food, drinks and of late, the controversial purchase of two Nigerian refineries.

Dangote, the man on the go to become a global business player with eye particularly on India and cornering of the sugar market in sub-Sahara Africa. Dangote, who is humble but confident enough to admit that he is by far richer than Oprah Winfrey, rated by Forbes as the richest black woman on earth.

Since our last interview in which we listed Dangote’s 10-point business tips, we have been inundated with requests for a continuation of the Dangote corporate secrets by those who said the first story left a great impact in their lives. It became inevitable that we have to return to the Dangote series.

On this Lagos Monday midday traffic gridlock, visible down below from the top floor of his massive office decorated with on-sight pictures of his factories, Dangote is on the verge of leaving Lagos for Ogun State where he is to sign a contract for two spanking new cement companies in Sagamu and Igbese, which would cost $2.4billion.
We couldn’t have come at a much better time for an interview with the man most Nigerians are eager to hear from, the man in the eye of the storm for the sale of two Nigerian refineries many believed were sold far too cheaply because of his strong links with the powers-that-be.

Dressed in ‘buba and sokoto’ with a black Yoruba cap to match, Dangote, is the Nigerian paradox: a rich man who looks like an average man, if not a poor man. An extraordinary man who looks like an ordinary man. In a country where riches go with loudness, pride and arrogance, Dangote is a quiet and humble man who would breeze through an airport without causing a stir. We had earlier met at the Murtala Muhammed Airport on our way to Abuja. He was kind enough to buy us a bottle of water and later agreed to this interview. In the plane, he did normal things like everybody else: eating and drinking the simple and not-so-tasty snacks offered. The only sign of affluence was that he chose to stay in the Business Class, which separated him from the “multitude” in the Economy Class.

Dangote is like a book you cannot judge by its cover. And he is a book himself, a bestseller waiting to be written. You are reading here the memoir before the memoir. It is Dangote’s frankest interview ever. And we serve it to you straight from the horse’s mouth, storified for your reading pleasure:

“The price Nigerians are paying for fuel and diesel is high because they are paying the price of inefficiency and corruption within NNPC,” Dangote says.

“They (NNPC) are not efficient. If they are efficient, then they should produce like India. We are paying for the inefficiency and corruption. There is corruption in the industry. It is a known thing.”

The Dangote story, which starts today, is part of the new focus of The Sun, the Voice of the Nation, a newspaper group that is moving to a higher plane as the centre of national discourse on business, political and social issues.

And, if there is one person whose meteoric forays into the commanding heights of the nation’s business and at times, political sectors, are stirring a national controversy, it is the shrewd corporate mogul, Aliko Dangote.

To some, he is the voice of business, the leader of the business community and the epitome of the Nigerian Dream. But to others and especially his ardent army of rivals and critics, he is profiting from an unconscionable political cronyism and simply buying up the nation’s economic legacies at give-away prices.

His case is made worse by the fact that he is an unapologetic friend of one of Nigeria’s most disliked political leaders, former President Olusegun Obasanjo. In this interview, Dangote opened up not only on the secrets of his dizzying multi-billion dollar business successes, he also gave insight into what binds him to the former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Being No.1
My story is the story of a man and a brand Nigerians have come to know, to love and to accept. Nigerians are investing in us because they believe in us, they believe in the name Dangote. Apart from believing in us, we have a track record which we have actually shown. If you look at all our factories, they have grown steady and gradually to where we are today. In all modesty, we can say we have done very well. There is no business that we are in and we are not No.1. The worse one that we have, maybe we have a second position.

That in itself is our business strategy. We aim to dominate our market, to lead in every market segment. They have all been run efficiently and professionally by people who really know the business very well. We have a very good brand name and that is part of what many people are actually investing in. They are not really investing in Aliko Dangote only. They are investing in the Dangote brand. They believe in my own business acumen but it is not the only thing that people are investing in. They are investing in the Dangote brand. Right from the beginning of our business, we have always been very conscious about what we give to the consumers. Because once you start on a wrong footing, that’s it. You’ve missed it. It’s almost impossible to go back and convince people.

It hasn’t been easy attaining No.1. We haven’t always started as No.1. Often, we start as a challenger, taking on a dominant player. Take the case where in year 2000 we started to enter a market where some people have been there 40 years before us. And we still went into the market and we fought our way in to become No.2. And we are on the verge of getting to No.1. The product is flour. We fought our way up into that market using the power of the Dangote brand and offering quality. Quality customer service and also the capacity. Because if you don’t have capacity, even when your market is good, you can’t do much. To meet capacity, we invested heavily. Apart from investing heavily, we made sure that our quality is good and consistent with the former quality when we used to import flour.

We used to be basically just importers. We were just importing and then we would market the goods and sell. In the beginning, we sold cement. Today, we manufacture cement. Today the best cement in Nigeria—you can go and take the samples and check—is coming from our one billion dollar factory at Obajana. And what we have there is 97 percent local raw materials. The only thing we lack is the gypsum. Even this, we buy some of it from Gombe area which we mix with the foreign ones. But everything is there in one location. And it is the best cement compared to the one we are importing from Taiwan, Europe and China.

The real cost in cement is the mining and the power. Power is a major cost. That is why the profit of a plant up North and the one down here is not the same. Because you need a lot of power up North in places like Ashaka. Ashaka and our own in Obajana is not the same cost. Even by economies of scale, when you look at staff strength of Ashaka, the staff strength of Ashaka is about two-and-half to three times more than the one we have in Obajana. Even though they produce 750,000 tons and we produce 5million tons. So you can see the big difference there. Because we have a very highly automated and most modern factory anywhere. If you look at our chimney, you would not see anything. No smoke belching out and polluting the environment. Nothing. You can eat under the machine. That is how environmentally friendly we practise. You don’t even hear the noise. You would think that the factory is off, but we are producing. You only see the cement out.

There is nothing extraordinary or mysterious about me. It’s just that we are very, very shrewd business-oriented company. Even though I am the CEO, it’s a collective business. I am not the only one that really runs the company. There are other good brains, there are other good brains. Because if I don’t have the good support, I can be the most entrepreneurial and talented person but I won’t be able to get to where we are today. Going forward, we have achieved so much and I believe in the next three years, by the time most of the projects stand on ground, we would be the biggest company in Africa.

Government and I
There is no one in the world who would have investments and be fighting government. It doesn’t matter where you are, whether you are in Russia, whether you are in UK, whether you are in America. You would not have investments and say, fine, my No.1 enemy is government. Do people who accuse me of being close to the government of Obasanjo expect me to say my No.1 enemy is government? It is not possible. There is no business that has no link with politics. None. And I challenge anybody to contradict me. Because you either say to a government in power, “ok, fine I am for you.” Or “I am against you.” And obviously, a right thinking business person would say, I am for you. If you need both the government and the people of the country, that is what you would do. That is where the issue of corporate governance and social responsibility comes in. You are not going to fold your arms, because you are operating within the environment. If you are operating within the environment, why do you want to make the government your enemy?

As an entrepreneur, you have to always try to advise the government. You have to tell them that yes, this is right, this is wrong.

In the modern world, the government does not really run the economy. It is the private sector that runs the economy. But there must be a good partnership between the government and the private sector. If the private sector and the government are at variance, then the economy would not move forward. But they need this cordial relationship to be able to move the economy forward. And that’s just where we are as a bridge. If I have this business and I now take a ministerial appointment, then it is totally a different ball game. It is not a question of boasting, our business is real. Real in the sense that yes, we have cement business for example.

The cement business that we have, every single government that comes in, we would be friendly with them, because we are government-friendly. That is No.1. And I believe each and every company is government-friendly. Let Jim Ovia go and be the enemy of government and you would see where Zenith Bank would go. Or UBA. Or First Bank. Even as conservative as First Bank, let them say they don’t have anything to do with government and that they are on their own. Let them be coming out to say things against the government. And they would reap the consequence.

Obasanjo and I
Former President Obasanjo and I became closer because his government is purely for people who would add value to the economy. If I wasn’t adding value to the economy, I can assure you that I wouldn’t be as friendly as I am with Obasanjo. Eighty-five percent of my relationship with Obasanjo has to do with the economy of the country. Even when we sit down, eight-five percent of the time is spent discussing the economy. How do we move the economy forward? And I think I have to be really grateful. Let me share my experience on cement, for example. But for Obasanjo’s encouragement and push, there is no way Obajana would have been possible at all. It was his push that made the difference. I would have made more money importing cement, because I know my cost, I would pass my cost on to the consumers. And today, freight rates from Asia are so high that it is unbelievable. People would have been paying more than N2,000 per bag for cement, if we were importing.

Right now, I am at the point of going to have a meeting with the governor of Ogun State, because we are going to do twice what we have done in Obajana in Ogun State, in Sagamu and Igbese. We are actually going to sign the contract this month, and the contractor would move to the sites and mobilise the sites within a period of 90 days. We have had this project for a while, but now we are doing even four times what we intended to do before.

Still on Obasanjo, let me tell you something. We have never, ever done business with anybody in the government. I don’t like to boast, but let me tell you something. I was born into money. Both my fathers—from my mother’s side and also from my father’s side—they have always had money. So, it’s not that I just came and picked up something from this thing. But it does not mean also in the family that everybody would be rich. I don’t know any of my family member—both from my mother’s side and my father’s side—that has ever had a deal with anybody in the government. It is not only Obasanjo. Even in the society, we don’t have partners.

For the new cement projects in Ogun State, we are targeting 10 million tons there. Now the cost of everything has gone up, even abroad.
